Artists living in Arizona come together to celebrate the two year anniversary of the Artlink Galleries in a group show this October and November at the Artlink A. E. England Gallery for an exhibition titled, Stories of Us.

The curatorial team has put together a diverse exhibition of 2D, 3D, and video work. The exhibition represents the artwork of artists who have shown in the Artlink A. E. England Gallery and/or the Artlink Gallery at Heritage Square in the past two years. The selected artists demonstrate a wide variety of style and media representing stories of their own experience as new, emerging, and established artists from the local community. The exhibition will also be part of the Arizona Humanities festival ‘Stories of Us’ that will be happening through Civic Space Park on October 22nd.

Exhibiting Artists: Stephanos Antoniades, Andrea Berg, Lee Davis, Sean Deckert, Daniel Funkhouser, Angelica Jubran-Bishara, Christina Mesiti, Cesar Napoleon, Christy Puetz, Junjie Verzosa and Cory Weeks.

The A.E. England Gallery presents Joseph Sentrock Perez: Heart Felt Rhymes- an exhibition of paintings. Perez works in a range of bold color contrasted by dark bold lines that accentuates his subject matter that is inspired by Phoenix culture.

“Joseph’s work, whether in murals or canvas shines. His work is real, it is the story of neighborhoods, Phoenix, himself. His use of color is new like the city, unique and alive. His play on words that he commonly uses in his work, give a narrative to the paintings, small clues to the stories he is telling with a brush. Joseph’s work is special, because he uses paint as his voice and through that brings each of us into his world, his experience, his city and his neighborhood.” -MIchael Soto, AZ Citizens for the Arts

Perez will be attending the closing reception on September 16th from 6-9 PM, during that time he will be available to answer questions on his work.

The A.E. England Gallery presents Sean Deckert: Sim·u·la·crum an exhibition of 20 photographic prints. The images include projections of “people on to people” which ultimately “blurs the portrait into a singular simulated portrait.” as described by the artist Sean Deckert. A full description by the artist can be found below.

“sim·u·la·crum/ˌsimyəˈlākrəm/Noun

1. An image or representation of someone or something.

2. An unsatisfactory imitation or substitute.

Projecting people onto people creates a primary and secondary identity in the image, which ultimately blurs the portrait into a singular simulated portrait. The projections and the subjects are individually relevant in the changing level of social awareness that the population is experiencing as a result of television programming. The portraits being projected can be viewed as iconic representations that have significant relevance to definitive ideas and values existent in society.  The people being projected onto are members of different social circles with a dynamic range in ethnicity, and roughly the same age. This narrative is a test of the viewers heightened sensitivity to the complex layers that manifest the realities threatening our simulated comfort caused by a lack of involvement in current issues facing human population.” – Sean Deckert

Blending science, psychology and art, Psyentifica: The Amusing Abstractions of Lee Davis brings approachable conceptual art to the viewer. With bold imagery and unique combinations, such as a crab with chainsaws, Davis attempts to captivate one’s attention in order to draw people in to create their own ideas about the peculiar images.

Lee Davis draws inspiration from scientific readings and the new developments in the subject. The majority of Davis’s artwork reflects an idea or theory of the scientific world. For example, ‘Crab On Acid’ is a depiction of the scientific discovery that blue crabs actually thicken their shells when exposed to more acidic water environments, unlike the other sea creatures that become weaker. Upon first glance of ‘Crab On Acid,’ this idea might not be the first one to jump to mind, but rather invites the viewer to create their own interpretations of the strong iconography.

Curator Amanda Washburn expands, “Although the scientific meaning behind Davis’s bold and vibrant work might not always be clear, the art pieces allow the viewer to develop his/her own thoughts about each image. It is with his background in graphic art that Davis is able to create eye-catching pieces that draw the viewer to see not only Davis’s scientific view but welcomes the viewer to create his/her own opinions as well.”

‘Crab On Acid,’ Lee Davis, 2010

The A.E. England Gallery presents Schrödinger’s Menagerie – an exhibition of dualities, alter egos, and transformed selves curated by Daniel Funkhouser. Featuring artists working in a diverse range of media, this exhibition celebrates multiple, often contradictory, approaches to identity. By taking on parallel lives, re-evaluating sexuality and gender, blurring conventions and distinctions, and challenging traditional definitions of media and art, these works are unified by their embrace of fluid forms of representation.

For the month of April, the A. E. England Gallery will be opening its doors with blank walls inviting people to hang their own artwork. Anybody will have a chance to get their work in the gallery with a “First Come, First Hang” opportunity until the walls are full. The pieces that make it in the space will remain on exhibit for the month of April.

With this experimental show, the gallery will open for First Friday Art Walk not only for an opening reception, but also for the installation of the exhibition. This is an opportunity for new artists, especially those who have not been part of a show, to make a start exhibiting their work as well as a great chance for established artists to be part of a unique gallery show. The viewer is also invited to see behind the scenes of a gallery as the show is installed during the opening reception.

The concept for Artist Salon: A Pop-Up Exhibition draws some inspiration from the 19th century French salons, especially the Salon des Refusés (Exhibition of Rejects) that was created to showcase artists’ work that was not accepted by the French Academy including work by Édouard Manet. This pop-up show gives the gallery to the artists to decide the artwork they wish to display.

Artist Salon: A Pop-Up Exhibition

Artlink A. E. England Gallery: April 1st – April 30th

For the month of April, the A. E. England Gallery will be opening its doors with blank walls inviting people to hang their own artwork. Anybody will have a chance to get their work in the gallery with a “First Come, First Hang” opportunity until the walls are full. The pieces that make it in the space will remain on exhibit for the month of April.

The doors to the gallery will open at 6pm to begin the installation process and opening reception for the exhibition. A sign-up table will be located at the entrance of the gallery to gather information as well as paperwork to fill out for those artists who make it into the exhibition. A representative from the gallery will be available to assist with the installation process. All artwork will be hung in the order of it’s arrival, if you arrive before 6pm please look for the sign that will start a line at the front of the gallery.

Installation / Opening Reception: April 1st, 6 -10pm
Closing Reception: April 15th, 6 – 9pm
De-Installation: TBD

Artists may submit up to 1 piece.

Requirements for Submission:

*Each work of art must follow the gallery’s hanging system. As part of a historic building, the gallery utilizes a hanging track system and artwork can not be nailed, glued, or attached in any way that may damage the walls.
*Artwork may not hang or attach to the ceiling in any way.
*Artists submitting sculpture must provide their own pedestal if it is necessary.
*The gallery only has one DVD player and projection screen and therefore will only accept the first video piece to display,
*The use of easels, portable walls, or any other system to create more wall space will not be permitted for this exhibition.
*Although there is no size restriction, artists should note that the wall height is 8’ so unless the artist wants their piece extending to the floor, artists should plan on submitting a piece that is smaller than 8’ in height.

Artlink Phoenix is excited to present the 13th Annual Juried Exhibition. This year we are fortunate to have our distinguished jurors: Phoenician artist Randy Slack; Senior Curator and Associate Director Heather Lineberry from ASU Art Museum; and Associate Director Duane Smith from Lisa Sette Gallery.

The 13th Annual Juried Exhibition will be displayed in the Artlink A. E. England Gallery for the month of March. The jurors have chosen 11 accomplished artists working in mediums that include sculpture, painting, photography, video, and installation.

For the month of February the Artlink A. E. England Gallery presents ‘Bent’ a solo exhibition by artist Vav Vavrek. ‘Bent’ is a collection of various mixed media compositions that include images of the artist. With his work, Vav attempts to address not only his own struggles and concerns, but also the concept of identity and the destructive force of humanity. He feels that dissent is the precursor to change and it is that belief that drives his art and life.

Bio: Vav was born in Wilkes Barre, PA and grew up in the shadows of the rusting smokestacks of Pittsburgh. A slight brain malfunction caused him to ride screaming into the wind on a faded steel horse until he lost his voice in Phoenix, AZ. he is currently creating works from nothing, or at least the remnants of nothing.
