Local Artists Cory Weeks and Alison Sweet present The Bird Cage. Inspired from the infamous Bird Cage Theater in Tombstone Arizona and its late 19th Century wallpaper. The collaborators offer this new multi-media art exhibition featuring portraits of modern-day women revealing their provocative and often “wild” west personas in conjunction with their modern day lives.

Recent graduates from ASU’s Intermedia Art program Weeks and Sweet are alumni Artlink curators and both share a love for history, especially Arizona history and the state’s adventurous early women. They poke some aesthetic fun with the past displaying it in the beautiful and historic AE England building in downtown Phoenix’s new Civic Space.

Jen Urso: White Space, Opening Reception January 15th, 6-9 PM

The Artlink A. E. England Gallery is proud to present a month long solo exhibition by Jen Urso titled, White Space. The opening reception will commence on third Friday, January 15th, 2010 from 6-9 PM. Jen Urso’s drawings, multimedia and performance work dwell on effects of time, process, and loss.

Between August 28 and September 6, 2009 Jen Urso walked the 82 miles between the two towns she grew up in—Reading and Lansdale, PA. People were invited to “follow”her as she recorded and documented her journey through video, sound, photos, drawings and a blog on the project website: jenniferursoart.com/WhiteSpace. Jen’s exhibit at the A.E. England gallery will include drawings created before, during and after her journey and ephemera from the trip. She will also preview her White Space video that utilizes animation, video and still imagery from her walk.

She has exhibited in locations such as The Icehouse, eye lounge, @Central Gallery (all Phoenix, AZ), Smack Mellon (Brooklyn, NY), The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (Scottsdale, AZ), Dinnerware Contemporary Arts (Tucson, AZ) and Durex Arte Contemporanea, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She has received grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and Contemporary Forum (Phoenix).

Jen Urso is originally from Reading and Lansdale, PA. She received a BFA in Art from Carnegie Mellon University in 1996 with additional studies at University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia and summer residencies at Virginia Commonwealth University and the Taliesin Artist Residency Program. She has been a resident of Arizona since 1996 and lives in Central Phoenix.

The Artlink A. E. England Gallery is proud to present a month long solo exhibition by Junjie Verzosa titled, The Style: Past and Recent Works. The opening reception will commence on third Friday, Dec 18, 2009 from 6-9 PM. Verzosa’s work explores the integration of ancient and modern cultural symbols and motifs within the media of oil painting.

Junjie Verzosa was born in Manila, Philippines and lived in Canada for 15 years before moving to Arizona. He majored in Painting at the Philippine College of Music and Fine Arts. He was a resident artist of the Heritage Art Center and an active member of the Art Association of the Philippines. His past solo exhibitions include the Queens Park Gallery in New Westminster, B.C. and The Firehouse Gallery, in Phoenix, AZ. Verzosa has been shown at the Shadbolt Center for the Arts, Thought Crime Miami Artworks, Kollektive Art and Design Group, the Gilbert Historical Museum, and most recently the Steele Pavillion Art Gallery, Herberger Theater Center.

The newly dedicated Artlink A. E. England Gallery is in its third month of operation. The gallery is a partnership between Artlink and the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation, enriching the community through arts and culture. The Curators Alison Sweet, Cory Weeks and M. Jenea Sanchez are local artists, active within the Phoenix Metro arts community. The Artlink A. E. England Gallery is located in the Historical A. E. England Building in Civic Space Park.

PACO VELEZ: Asi Son Mis Dias/Borderline Survival, November 20th – December 11th

The Artlink A. E. England Gallery is proud to present Paco Velez for a month long exhibition, with the opening reception on third Friday, Nov 20, 2009. Velez’s work explores the social, cultural, political and economic tensions (and contradictions) of the U.S./Mexico border. The exhibition will consist of large-scale mixed-media paintings as well as a performance art work at the closing reception on December 4, 2009.

Paco Velez is currently an artist in residence at the (MOCA) Museum of Contemporary Art, Tucson, AZ. His exhibitions include: MOCA, Teatro Auditorio, Nogales, Sonora, Arizona Biennial, Tucson Museum of Art. His works are in two permanent museum art collections : MOCA Tucson, and El paso Museum of art. He recieved best artist of the year 2008 in the Tucson Weekly, and has shown in the Binational of the El Paso Museum of Art and Bellas Artes Museum of Art Ciudad Juarez. Velez also has several pieces in private art collections in U.S.A. Mexico and Spain. Velez travels between studios in Tucson, AZ and Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. He is a member of the THE TOOLE SHED Art Collaborative, Tucson, AZ.

Paco Velez’ dynamic exploration and excavation of two Americas reveals itself through painting, performance, installation and video. Velez’ unbridled energy demands attention to complex and unpleasant realities of globalization hot spots like the US-Mexico border, yet his playful humor and profound humanity facilitate the lesson. His absurdist propositions—giant burrowing bunnies and other “teratologies”–combined with his techno-folk-pop-activist sensibilities make for an unforgettable art experience.

Exhibition Opening for Siri Khandavilli: For the Love of Money

We would like to thank you all for coming out to celebrate the first standing exhibit of the Artlink A. E. England Gallery on October 16th, 2009. This event highlighted the opening exhibition of Siri Khandavill’s For the Love of Money. We also celebrated the opening of the renovated historical A. E. England Building throughout the Civic Space Park with live music, great art, a classic car display and an official commemoration ceremony.

Siri Khandavill’s For the Love of Money will be up in the Artlink A. E. England Gallery until the closing reception on First Friday November 6th.

We would also like to thank Theron Gibbons and Stephen Barr for all the great photos of the event.

Siri Khandavilli: For the Love of Money, October 16th – November 6th

The Artlink A.E. England Gallery opening exhibition will feature artist Siri Khandavilli. Her solo exhibition titled “For the Love of Money” will include a variety of Mixed Media and Video works. The opening reception is from 6-9 PM on October 16th. The gallery will also be open for a closing reception on First Friday November 6th from 6-10 PM and by appointment.

Siri Khandavilli is an intermedia artist working in the realms of video art, paintings and installations. In this set of works, “For the Love of Money”, Siri Khandavilli contemplates on the complex relationship between her and Money. She does this by juxtaposing some of the important aspects of human life like food, sex and death against money.

The artist, who was born and brought up in India, uses imagery and symbols drawn from the Hindu myths and rituals. For example, the recurring motif of a crow is associated with death rituals in Hinduism. The artist blends her metaphors and symbols drawn from such solemn sources with humor. There are witty uses of references to pop culture as well as to the current art scene.

The mixed media works are seductive, mysterious, metaphorical, visceral and surprisingly amusing at the same time. As in her previous works, the artist continues to explore concepts of contradictions and agreements.

Siri Khandavilli, in her video work Eat, explores the concept of infinite consumption. The video shows the artist in the physical act of eating paper cutouts of currency, shaped as butterflies and flies. The artist uses butterflies as symbols for the ephemeral and the fly as a symbol of death/ mortality. The act of eating is shown as a never ending spiral and the video is presented as an endless loop.

Siri Khandavilli’s works have been exhibited at ASU, Harrywood Gallery, Modified Art Gallery, India Habitat Center, India International Center, Belgium Indian Festival, Art Junction and Brazilian Embassy (India).
Her works are in private collections in USA, UK, India and Italy.
